Asus is ready with a new refreshed U5F build around their older Sonoma platform. Laptop gets its power from the Intel Core 2 duo T5500 processor with display being a 12.1-inch XGA monitor. With 80 GB HDD and 512Mb RAM the laptop also has features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dual-layer DVD burner, while the graphics are powered by Intel 945GM integrated graphic set. It comes pre-loaded with Window XP (Vista Compatibility is missing I suppose) and the Asus’s own “Splendid video intelligence technology” will give you enhanced viewing experience as it will automatically set the contrast, brightness and color ratio. Apart from this there are also USB ports, Ethernet Jack and VGA output. The price of this beauty weighing 1.4kg is not known but you can be sure of finding it in Chinese markets soon.

IEEE draft on the 802.11n might not come till 2008 but more and more companies are jumping the wagon. Latest to come in the 802.11n fold is D-Link whose DWA-643 Xtreme N Notebook ExpressCard got FCC go-ahead. We all know that with the 802.11n draft the wireless net access will get a new meaning and as per reports D-link will soon start the shipment of the card but there is no word on the price as yet. The card will also backward compatible to all the upgrades the Wi-Fi has gone.
Don’t dismiss it as any another UMPC as the leaked pictures and specs of Medion MD RIM 1000 UMPC suggest that this forthcoming device packs a punch. For the starters it has VIA 1GHz ultra-low voltage processor coupled with 512MB RAM and a slider keyboard. The UMPC will come with the options of 20, 30 and 40 GB HDD with a 6.5-inch screen which will be powered by Unichrome Pro graphics. It will have built in webcam and digital TV tuner and as far as connectivity is concerned this UMPC also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and to put icing on the cake it is said that this little devil will be able to run Vista. It will weigh around 1.5 lbs and its battery will support your endeavors for 4 to 5 hours but no info has been provided on the price and availability front.
The UMPC’s are trying to make a come back HTC latest to be released Athena is a hybrid of phone and UMPC. Now there are also rumors that another not so well known company called ‘Tatung’ is also trying its hand in the UMPC market. Although the info on the specs of the device is scanty but it looks larger than the pocket PC’s. The device runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 OS with a longer battery life and the industry insiders are hopeful to see it in CES 2007 in Las Vegas. It was last seen in COMPUTEX in Taiwan.
LG Electronics have presented there new 12.1-inch wide notebook PC series ‘Xnote Z1 series’. The note book has a 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 duo T5600 under its hood with a 100 GB SATA hard drive. The graphics are powered by ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 and it also has two built in speakers that give 3W of output. It will also come pre-loaded with two new sound technologies ‘SRS WOW HD’ and ‘SRS TruSurround TX’. This 1.89 kg notebook is expected to be priced at 1,840,000 Won which is round about $2000 USD.
Asus opened some of its cards before CES starts. One of the two devices which will be displayed in the show is Asus XG audio-visual Station, a device that will enhance the performance of your laptop in the graphics and A/V department. It will get connected to your notebook and has its own graphic chips plus Dolby output and USB 2.0 slot. The other product that will be shown in this show will be the W5Fe notebook with vista and a external display that will show time, date and other info. With these Asus is also bringing G1 and G2 gaming notebooks to the show. Stay tuned as when CES starts we will bring you full review of the above mentioned products.
Apple and its biggest rival in Laptops HP are both planning to release LED-Backlit laptops in spring of 2007. This new integration of LEDs will dramatically improve the quality of the displays. This move can be taken with the launch of Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.5 as both have great graphics and also need some good screens to show them. Such backlit displays have found a passage into the HDTVs and also some LCD screens but were initially not integrated into the Laptops as they consume more juice out of the battery. I think that both the companies will have made some changes in the batteries of the Laptops so that they can handle the load of these displays…!
This CES the Eclipse Solar Gear will display there unique solution the Hybrid Notebook case for providing extra power source for Laptops, MP 3, cellphones and other devices that have the danger and habit of running out of power at crucial times. Eclipse Solar Gear is a brand owned by the Innovus Designs Inc Company and is a CES Innovations 2007 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for this Hybrid case. The case will get its power through Solar panel and also has Cooling solution attached to improve performance of the laptop. This battery will come handy for a person always on the move and the Hybrid case will be available in various shapes and sizes to cater to whole gamut of laptops.
AsusTek will be very soon launching its 17-incher widescreen barebone ASMobile Z84Jp laptop for the Asus aficionados. The new 8.8 pound machine will come rocking a 1680 x 1050 display, Intel Core 2 Duo processor (up to 2.33GHz), Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card with 512MB of VRAM, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and S-video out. Other key specs of the multimedia whitebox laptop include HDMI out, ExpressCard, PC Card, and 7-in-1 media reader. The ASMobile Z84Jp comes with a carrying bag and is adorned with a piano-black finish. Though there is no info about the pricing of the new machine (it won’t come cheap as far as I think), it will most probably get an official launch in the late January.
The excitement around the Macworld Expo is building with Other World Computing (OWC), announcement that they will be unveiling Modbook, a Mac tablet, on the 9th Jan at the expo. it has been jointly developed by Axiotron and OWC. The note book will have in built WACOM Penenabled hardware support that is also compatible with Apple Inkwell and will allow users to directly draw and write on the screen. Full details will only be revealed on 9th January but it is said that it also has GPS option available. The official release says that this will come in handy for all mobile users Artists and students and has been designed by a team of German and American Engineers. More details when it is unveiled.
